Atlantic, Tennessee and Ohio railroad trains brought passengers and
freight to Moore’s Siding and opened markets to local farmers and
merchants. A second line was opened to Winston Salem through
Mocksville in 1886. Proximity to transportation was essential in
making the town grow and prosper. The rumble of locomotives became
part of the character of the community.
The
one acre lot housing the Depot was established as the center of town
at an elevation of 918 feel above sea level, measured from the
center of the first crossing street at the Depot door. The corporate
limits extended one mile in every direction. The Public Road became
Main Street and the first crossing road was Center Avenue. Main
Street was wider than the original roadway, and Broad Street
followed the same design. |
